"Ok, guys........after all the hubbub and crap going on about the CORRECT
tranny/gear lube for our Corvairs, as an Amsoil dealer, I finally called
them and talked at length to a tech rep. It seems about everyone on here
and their info is pretty much full of crap. . . . As far as Amsoil is
concerned, GL - 5 is the only gear lube to use!!!!!!! It won't hurt a thing!"

That is the great thing about a religion, in can justify almost anything.

But, seriously, Randy - Amsoil lists their own GL4 lube. Here are their
listed "benefits": (Note #3)

Promotes Longevity in Front-Wheel-Drive  Transaxles
Synthetic Manual Transmission Gear Lube meets 75W/80W-90 viscosity
requirements and exceeds API GL-4 performance requirements for many
front-wheel-drive vehicles. Its excellent gear protection, extreme-temperature
performance and durability promote maximum longevity and reduced maintenance costs.

    * Protects against increased heat and pressure
    *   Outstanding cold-flow properties
    *   Protects brass synchronizers
    *   Friction-modified
    *   Excellent seal compatibility
    *   Inhibits rust and corrosion
    *   Long service life

But if you read their recommendations for their GL5 spec gear oil,
Their product name: 75W-90 Long Life Synthetic Gear Lube,
 it only recommends it for axles if GL4 was the original spec.

"Use AMSOIL Long Life Synthetic Gear Lube in differentials, manual
transmissions or other gear applications where one or more of the following
standards are specified: API GL-5 & MT-1, MIL-PRF-2105E, Dana SHAES 234  (Formerly
Eaton PS-037) for 250,000 miles, Dana SHAES 256 (Formerly Eaton PS-163)
for 500,000 miles, Dana SHAES 429A, Mack GO-J & GO-J+, Meritor 0-76N  (75W-90)
& 0-80 (80W-140) plus hypoid gear oil specifications from ZF TE-ML 07A and
08 foreign and domestic manufacturers such as GM, Ford and Daimler
Chrysler. It can also be used in rear axles where API Service GL-4 lubricant is
recommended."

I added the bold above. So, if you wish to run Amsoil, why not run their
GL4 product? It is what AMSOIL recommends. - Seth
