Yes, that is my theory too, but I do not want to be the bearer of bad news
without being sure that his "original" Corsa has in fact been defiled by an
unscrupulous mechanic or whomever.
Step 1 is to confirm that an engine block stamped with "RV" is definitively
a "PG" block, which would confirm your (and my) theory.

It was an available engine when the original gave up? A youngster was going
to drive it and the parents didn't want a "hot" engine in it? Some other
reason?
You've got to remember that these cars have been around for ~50 years and
many will certainly have an unknown history.
