But, as I understand it, WD-40 is a waxy substance dissolved in a solvent. 
The solvent evaporates away and leaved a light coating of the waxy stuff, 
whatever it is.  The wax certainly will serve as a lubricant coating for 
whatever it's on.

WD-40 is not a lubricant. It was developed to displace water in electrical 
systems (distributor caps), hence the WD means water displcement.
