<VV> Lifters and linkages

Smitty Says;  First, we have a club newbie that is trying to straighten out his recently acquired “Ran when parked” car engine.  Getting into the valve train he found two lifters with the snap ring out and the lifters disassembled in place.  What causes this?

Second, Installed a recently rebuilt PG in another newbies car.  Tranny drives forward but no reverse.  Also it is obvious that the pump is staying loaded at all times no matter where selector is placed.  Manual valve adjustment as in page 6E-4  Fig 6E-3 of the 61 manual has been checked.  Also check of TV lever has been done carefully as per Fig 6E-7 several times.  I have read the trouble shooting chart and done what can be done with the tranny in the car.
I’ll take your suggestions as long as you don’t tell me the muffler is clogged.  GG
