     Yes, that is not a fun situation. The insidious part of it is, you 
have lost your cooling belt but the generator runs like a motor keeping 
the idiot light from coming on.  It's happened to me several times back 
in the day when I still ran generators.

     On a steam locomotive we have steam powered "dynamos" that produce 
electricity for the lights. Basically a dynamo is a device that can act 
as a charging unit or a motor.  The Corvair generator is partially like 
that.

     Just one of multiple reasons why I don't run generators, even 
though right now all I own are earlies.
