<VV> Starter issue ~ used-but-good solenoids ?

Oops! Apparently I was wrong about the solenoid not being separately
available.
I seem to remember that I had to buy the entire starter to get the solenoid,
but that was then, this is now?
Joel straightened me out on that, so thanks for the update!

Solenoids are easily available. Rebuilt starters come without them, last
time I checked. However, the "Bendix" drive is part of the starter rebuild -
or should be, at least checking the operation of it. It is easy to check the
operation of the solenoid out of the car. Not as easy to check to see if the
bendix drive kicks out the gear. You may have to look around a bit to find a
good new solenoid. I had an older, good US made, HD solenoid for the race
car. It made the cheap, current replacement units look pathetic! - Seth

It me be easier swapping out the whole starter than the solenoid, just more
expensive, which is probably why the cheaper solenoid is not available
separately?
Typically paying a mechanic $100 an hour to disassemble it to install the
solenoid would quickly eat up any savings that reusing the starter motor
might save.
However, on a DIY job, it's YOUR time and YOUR money, so maybe used-but-good
solenoids in our parts bins are the cheaper route to take?
Just curious but how often does the actual starter motor go bad?
Just my opinion, and I never leave home without it ;>~}

What a revolting development that is! (It is probably the "bendix" drive,
not the solenoid.) It is easier swapping out the whole starter than the
solenoid. -Seth

Guys,
I am one of the few who drive a Corvair daily as my sole car. The other
night the starter would spin without the solenoid engaging. It took
multiple tries until it finally worked normally. Since then it has worked
normally.
I don't know whether I should put a new solenoid this weekend; or chalk it
up to gremlins. Any opinions?
Thanks,
Andy K.
