A friend had a broken crank in his 63 coupe, it ran fine except for a strange knocking and a slight vibration. He drove it for several weeks like that... The way we found it was when we pulled the blower housing off to check the rod bearings trying to find the source of the knock. I was turning the crank with a wrench and noticed that the back half of the crank moved before the front half of the crank... It broke right in the middle and didn't affect any oil passages or bearing surfaces.
 And I wouldn't put it past Smitty  to do something like what you describe, With Helen standing guard....

I refuse to believe that anyone broke a crankshaft a hundred miles from the 
nearest habitation, parked on a dirt road, dropped the engine, split the 
block, installed a spare shaft which they just happened to have, reinstalled 
the engine without jacks, etc. and drove merrily off before breakfast.  No, 
there's too many bottles of Jack Daniels in that scenario.
