Hi everyone,
We are here in Sacramento with Craig and Lea Lamond, who arrived with
the FIRST Ultravan prototype. It is powered by a 1960 Corvair
powertrain. Craig just rebuilt the distributor by purchasing a core
from Rich Eastburn of Sacramento's Corvair club. Since the distributor
he had was a total piece of junk, the 1960 Corvair engine runs a TON
better for the first time since he has owned it (a month) on their trip
home in Oregon traveling from Lane Museum in Nashville. It did not
even run when Craig picked it up from the museum, even though it was
stated as restored. NOT hardly!
Craig and I now think we know the initial adjustment for the mounting
screws in the vacuum canister slotted mounting to the distributor base
since we saw page 8 30 from the shop manual Chet posted on Corvair
Center's Forum. We had guessed to put it in the middle of the
adjustment range. I have a fully adjustable timing light and a hand
vacuum pump so we should be able to set the distributor. However we
are not certain of the correct timing and advance settings for the 1960
Corvair powered Ultravan engine. Although Matt Nall's tech tip page did
give us the distributor settings if we only knew which setting to use
for a stock 1960 PG engine in an Ultravan.
We are guessing around 13 to 16 degrees at 500 rpms in drive for timing
before TDC at idle. Full centrifugal advance is unknown for specs and
Vacuum Advance might be 22 degrees at 16 inches starting at 0 degrees at
6 inches.
Any help would be appreciated before they pull out of Sacramento likely
on Monday AM.
Thanks,
Larry Forman
