No heater - No nothing

My first Corvair Van (62?)- semi-converted into a camper - plywood for a
sleeping bag and curtained, crank open shutter windows (which never really
cranked closed!) was a 3-speed with only one option - the right side front
seat. No radio, no heater - No nothing! I remember trying to coax that thing
(No first gear snychro) over the Santa Cruz hills to Laguna Seca, and
sleeping in the back with my wife, with the Pacific ocean breezes freezing our
butts off. Light sleeping bags, that was it. I don't think she ever forgave
me for that weekend in the van. The racing was great - camping? - not so
much!

I have seen an Econoline from the FC era that was a telephone van from
somewhere in the southwest and it had been ordered without heat /
defrost -- my friend got an outrageous deal on it because of that (here
in Oregon). Some one had also removed all four shocks -- talk about a
strange ride -- sorta like a "clown car".

I have not seen an FC without heat however -- however, I do not live in
the American Southwest, where cars without heaters were not uncommon in
the early sixties. Saw several when I was working in the auto trades in
Texas, but again, no Corvairs that way.
