IF they are otherwise clean , and the nuts not all banged up from improper  
tools used , clean with steel wool or scotchbrite pads and use the clear   
ENGINE enamel . It should hold up to gas and heat to @500degrees (according 
to  the can). I think mine is a rustoleom product. I also use in on cleaned 
up  hardware.
I even do this to new lines.
The semi gloss black spray cans  I have been using is a 1634  napa  engine 
paint. If you put it on too heavy , it turns out too  glossy.
