Would it make sense to install a WIDE-band Oxygen sensor (with dashboard readout) in the exhaust line? I believe modern cars use these to provide feedback to the computer to adjust the air/fuel ratio entering the combustion chambers of the engine. But we could use it to let us know UNDER WHAT CONDITIONS the mixture entering the cylinders has become too lean (or too rich) for correct firing.
Amazon offers these in the $150 to $200 range.

But he can run down the freeway as long as he keeps light throttle.
Doesn't that suggest that the off-idle is ok?
If the jets were ok, it should run fine when he mashes it in midrange,
aside from any stumble caused by possible accelerator pump issues.
Another thing - Won't headers and free-flowing mufflers tend to lean the
mixture?
