Frank,At least with my car the heater seems to work better with it attached. I tried with out and the heater was just to hot for california.I adjusted heater mixer valve and verified that it is positively closed when in the off position. No leakage that I can detect. Perhaps I will block hose and remove top of blower box. It is not raining in California anymore so don't have to worry about water in the heater.Thanks, Jim

History shows why it is located at #5.
 
Look at an early, 61 to 64, engine bay. The hose that feeds fresh air to
the duct system is just 4" long, 3" in diameter and attaches to a plenum
right there in the engine bay on the firewall. This plenum is where the
blower motor sits, as the other side of the engine has the starter in that
location.
 
The late models opened up the firewall for engine air flow, so the heater
blower plenum had to be redesigned. I guess some bean counter said, don't
redesign the rest of the shroud, just use a long hose we can squash in the
middle to go through an oval hole! Of course "they" also gave the 65s that
little box off the heater plenum you can remove the top of to get fresh air
sucked into (not blown into) the heater ducts.
 
The turbo and AC cars had a fit problem with that long hose, so those got
the redesigned shroud (turkey Roaster).
 
Why did you bother to relocate the hose? Most people just remove the hose
and block off the shroud. Some of those go to the trouble to also block off
the 3" hole in the heater blower housing. But, just keeping the "Air"
control off on an early does the same thing.
 
The purpose of this hose is to blend "cool" air into the heater system. For
maximum heat, this hose is not used.
