<VV> 2 door wagon

Indeed I do, Frank. But I was wondering if my car was built from a 4 door or
2 door wagon. It is impossible to see any engineering on the panels on the
sides to the rear of the doors, so I began to wonder if it was built from a
2 door. Judging by the replies on the forum, there was no such animal, so
it speaks again to the workmanship of the folks who did my conversion.
Happy New Year, all, and the car is actually for sale.

It may have been cancelled, but I know that my 1963 Spyder had them, and
that it was an early build car, since it was sold the week of introduction
of the 1963, by Balise Chevrolet in Springfield MA. Is it possible that it
started life as a 1962 on the assembly line, and wasn't completed when they
shut down for the change over for the 1963 model year? What was the date of
the start up of production of the 1963 model year cars? I don't believe
that if GM had a supply of lower control arms that had the rebound strap
links welded onto them, that they would just toss them into the scrap pile.

>In any discussion of R.P.O. 696, the heavy-duty suspension option for '62
and '63, it should be noted that the rebound straps were eliminated for
model year 1963. In the Options section of the 1963 assembly manual the
rebound strap assembly instructions bear a marking over top which reads;
"CANCELED". In the fine print at the bottom of the page is a note dated
8-10-62 that says; "SHEET CANCELLED".

I was discussing titles and registrations recently with another club member,
he had recently titled a car from Vermont and told me that Vermont is one of
two states that doesn't issue titles for vehicles, so a bill of sale is
sufficient to title a car in your state. It could be you have an easier
time of it than if it were from another state.

I've heard the entire DMV staff in VT is a b old man leaning over a cracker
barrel, so maybe I can get somewhere faster than in PA with all its red
tape. The VT registration from 1975 has an ownership transfer o n the back
to be signed over by the seller. WHAT TO DO?

Check with a AAA garage. We had a master set of @65 keys for early GM (now
here in my shop , but they never leave here!) You try them until one works
, then cut a new one. The keys are numbered on a large chain. They have
bailed me out many times when I get a junker , or a dash unit.
Or remove dash , and take to locksmith. If you have the lock in your hand ,
most lock guys will fix you up quickly and not that expensive.

Just curious but, in your experience, how much is "not that expensive" to
compare with whatever quote I get?
I bought a '65 convert and never put the top up for the first 3 months,
until "California freezes over" or until I get caught in the rain and so
never considered locking the doors.
A week before Christmas it did rain, so I put the top up, and I figured I
might as well lock the doors too.
When I got back to my car, I discovered that the ignition key, nor the truck
key, would unlock the doors!
(It had never occurred to me to test the key in the door before I locked
them all!)
I then also discovered just how tight the windows were, and also discovered
that the dipstick was now too brittle to bend, to use it to pop the lock
buttons through that tight space between the door and quarter windows!
The dipstick snapped off at the "full" line, and rendered it useless as
either opening the door or as a dipstick any longer!
I then discovered how hard it is to find a wire coat hanger, which took
longer to find than to actually open the car when I finally did find one!
So, short story made way too long, I'm now looking to find a matching set of
keys and locks to replace them all, or if cheaper, get a locksmith to re-key
the doors, to match the ignition?
Thanks for listening ...
Charlie

Some time back there were questions and suggestions for oil drip pans for
some car that might drip oil. If you have a Aldi grocery store in your area,
check it out. They currently have an "Essentials Utility Tray" from
Huntington Home for $4. It is 15"x 29.5" and will catch most engine drips
or at least the front and rear seals. Whose valve covers leak! Black color
and made of polypropylene with an approximate 1" lip. Suggested use
includes tray for shoes, plants, pet feeding station, etc. I bought two the
guy behind me got one. I will probably use mine on the International
Scout!Ray Davis

Check pages 0-3 and 0-4 of the '65 chassis manual for info on just how easy
it is to re-key a lock. Can't cost too much for 20 minutes of work.

Assuming you have the lock cylinder in your hand, it has a 4 digit code on
it. I called Jeff at the Corvair Ranch and got keys inexpensively enough
that I forget the price. Chances are other places can do it, but I'd hit
the Corvair vendors first because your local locksmith gets plenty of
business from Toyota owners.

Note - I've been always told, and practice, "never lock a convertible".
Why? Because anyone with a box cutter has a key. Thieves don't do things
nicely, they break stuff. If you get the car back, it's just more broken
than if it were unlocked. If you wish to secure something, lock it in the
trunk.

Hi Smitty----hope you and yours are well..
True or not makes no difference, we both know it happens. Doesn't mean you
really did it. VERY commonly done in NC up until this past year (2014), for
cars purchased in states other than NC. New Law 01/01/14, all vehicles
brought into NC from other states must be brought in for a DMV inspection
before a NC title can be issued.
Somehow, though I'm not sure, I doubt a DMV inspector would know where the
hidden VIN for a Corvair is. And if that particular part of the body was
missing and/or replaced, what would they do really? If you have a Corvair
Title with matching VIN plate, (Which most of us have several) that fits the
description of the car being titled----Yes, it's against the law. I've been
argued at in the past for saying "I prefer this mild breaking of the law in
order to save a car and put it on the road.". Distilling your own alcohol
without a distilling permit and a tax permit from the ABC Board is against
the law in NC too, but many law enforcement officers turn a blind eye to
small batch pot stills. Too busy chasing down meth labs I would imagine.
