In my limited experience they tend to leak pretty bad with the pan missing.

Subject: <VV> PG leak
Is it possible for the front cover (the black one) to develope a leak? If so, how hard is it to replace the seal while in the car? Mine seems to have a leak above the aluminum flange that the pan bolts up to as I can find fluid accumulating there before it drains down to the gasket and pan.
The leak seems to be above the rectangular machined surface. Note orange paint indicating a 140 PG.
