Smitty Says; OK this case is laid to rest. A good many people wrote and suggested a stopped up muffler as the problem, keeping the engine from running except in short spurts. I resisted that notion because I distinctly felt the exhaust on my pants legs when it would run. With 20-20 hindsight I now realize that what I was feeling was likely hot air exhaust from the engine. In any event as I said on my last post on the subject I planned on removing the muffler and hot wiring the coil on my next trip. A few days ago I got to thinking the owner might be able to overcome his age and condition long enough to get the muffler off. I called him and he said he had a young neighbor he might be able to suck in on the job.
A couple of hours ago he called and said they got the muffler off. Turned the key, and the engine fired up and idled for 10 minutes. He said it revved OK too. Glory Be. I’ll make one more trip to Sync the carbs and recheck the timing , but I am done. the lesson here is leave no turd un-stoned. Or something like that.
