<VV> ATF and Sticking Blocker Rings NO!

That is why in my initial comments on ATF I stated:
"I'm not sure which version of ATF I would try. Pick one with an EP rating
or ring and pinion problems will be next. "
The problem is not with bevel gears. Lube requirements for bevel gears are
substantially the same as for straight cut or helical gears. Most
transmission gears are helical, not straight cut. The concern is with
hypoid gears. The Corvair spider gears are bevel gears. The ring and
pinion are hypoid.
The reason I started by suggesting Hy-Tran was because it has sheer and EP
additives along with friction modifiers for wet clutches.

Remember, our trannys share fluid with the differential, so you DO NOT want
to lube hypoid gears in the rear with ATF!

This discussion of ATF in our transmissions is a little off the mark and
worrisome. As an aid to making the blocking ring problem go away I agree,
but only as an additive. ATF is fine in transmissions with cross-cut gears
like FWD, but (unless the formulations have changed drastically) it doesn't
have the shear wear protections necessary for our beveled gears. Or have
formulations for ATF changed so much in the last few years?
