<VV> <vv> steering box centering when adjusting

Sounds like the box wasn't at center when the steering wheel was. I took a car into the dealer once to have the wheel centered. Instead of adjusting the tie rods to center the wheel they popped the steering wheel off and re installed it "centered." I had to get the shop boss involved to get things straightened out--the shop boss was as embarrassed by his staff as I was frustrated by them

</div>One thing, when working on crusty old steering boxes - once you take the
load off the steering box (imo, just getting the wheels off the ground
does most of the job) you can turn the wheel from lock to lock, and just
feel for tightness.
Put it in the middle, adjust the screw on top of the box, and run it
lock-to lock again. See if it feels funny, or if it is tighter somewhere
other than in the middle. You can get a feel for what shape it's in.
Of course, how far the adjusting screw goes in tells you a lot too.
I've had steering boxes (non-Corvair) that would get tight away from
center, but had slop at center.
Obviously, they were in really poor condition.
(but everything about that car was in poor condition...)
cheers
