Ray,  I guess that I should have said it this way...  The steering wheel 
needs to be centered when doing the adjustments, but it also needs to be on 
the spline correctly so that you actually will be on the "high spot" in the 
steering box.

If you have the steering wheel (so to speak) off center, you could do what 
Doug suggested on counting turns - lock to lock - and then putting it in the 
middle even if the wheel ends up not being positioned for straight ahead. 
This would also help you locate the mark where the wheel SHOULD be attached 
to the spline.
