Doug meant to say "disconnect the pitman arm from the cross shaft"! Leave
it installed on the steering box, just pop out the bushing at the tip. That
is the bushing that is often worn out, often replaced by Nylon, etc. Do not
remove the Pitman arm - Not only is it close to impossible to do under the
car, it is not needed to do what Doug suggests, which is isolating the
steering gear from all the load of the suspension. Remember to have the wheels
and the steering gear close to center when re-attaching the bushing to the
tip of the pitman arm. If it is not centered, the rubber will be
pre-loaded when you tighten it down and center the wheel. This drastically reduces
the life of a stock-type rubber bushing. - Seth
