another oddity - the contacts and pigtails for the bulb socket were way 
too short.
I was sure I had seen them somewhere.
I went to a local trailer supply - they have all sorts of goodies. No 
pigtails. They solemnly told me they couldn't get them for a reasonable 
price, and they just cannibalized a new light assembly when they need to 
fix an old one.

Next stop, the local O'Reilly store. Yep, three different kinds, about 
$3 - 3.19 each.
I didn't think of looking for the terminals there.
