Hi Frank,
No real good reason for checking the oil while the car was running. I saw it
shoot out of the dipstick tube at high RPMS and I was just curious as to
what the reading on the dipstick was at lower RPMS. Just a spur of the
moment thing.

The old method we used was to remove the oil pan and cut the part of the dip
stick tube off that sticks below the block. This does have the bad side
effect of allowing the blowby gasses to get into the engine compartment and
then pulled into the passenger compartment when the heater is on. The same
thing will happen if you put a hole in the oil filler cap, but all you would
need to correct it is to replace the cap.

You could run a hose from your hole in the cap to outside the engine
compartment so fumes will not be sucked into the heater.

BTW, why would you check the oil with the engine running? It proves nothing.
There is no data to compare running oil levels, and it just makes a mess!
