That, and there's more than one iron oxide. Fe2O3 isn't very magnetic. Fe3O4 is VERY magnetic. This is what's in ferrite magnets, tape coatings, etc.

I should have thought of that since I have used all the types of 
magnetic tape (yes, even 2") in my electronics hobby/career.
But even past that, I worked for a company that made the polyester film 
that other companies coated with iron oxide to make magnetic tape!
