ABS was never intended to shorten stopping distances (factual correction 
appreciated, if I am wrong).  It was developed to allow directional 
stability and control in maximum stop situations, ie sorta an automatic 
"experienced driver pumping the pedal".

And read your new car's owner manual for what conditions ABS may not be 
effective.
