Mark,
My 2010 Malibu has the same feature, but I thought it was based on algorithms that take data from engine speed, road speed, load etc. and not by actually sampling the oil. Either way I appreciate the feature and have noticed how it varies depending on time of year and amount of stop and go driving. Quite impressive.

New cars have had these devices built into their computer for years. My
daughters 09 HHR has one and she gets about 8500 miles on a regular oil
change with it, and the oil still looks pretty good when I drain it. as
you cycle though the computers features an item comes up that lists
the % of oil life remaining.
