 Yeah, the mule drive does stink, but a large part of that is how much HP the fan sucks at full speed. 

As far as a simpler, less expensive solution, an electric drive with enough HP to do the job is the antithesis of that!

The serpentine routing of the stock Corvair fan belt (allows one to 
rotate the alternator for straight line belt use)
