You're thinking of the  IRL  (Idiots Racing Lawnmowers)- I tried it -once- they can get to be pretty fast. And Corvair Content- some are rear engined, Air Cooled.

And the top three reasons why are:

4) not enough speed entering the turn

3) too wide spacing on the gearset

2) had enough torque to pull thru

1) no one would ever lend me a mower . . .
