If you are doing the water trick , get the motor well warmed up first.Then  
make sure you do not put too much in at a time!  This works very well on  
heads , but not restricted ports. GM CarbonX works fair also.
I use high speed die grinder with different wire wheels for most of my  
heavy parts cleaning , including heads..
If the heads are very very dirty , I put them in an oven I have in the shop 
 and heat them @400 for about half hour. let them cool , air hose will blow 
most  of the crud off after you dried all the oil out of it , carbon 
included. I have  a built in oven that was tossed from remodeling job from trash 
at appliance  store that I put a cord on like my welder. Plugs in when needed 
(not often , but  it is very handy) This lets me do valve guides without 
any damage to the heads  also. I can roll it outside if in summer , and parts 
are really crummy. 
Has anyone ever had success with that Harbor freight powder coating kit? I  
hear that you need to buy better powder color than theirs? I hope to set   
mine up soon , bought it years ago and never opened it.
