 I buy the small cans for that reason. More expensive? Yeah, but I trash a lot less if it screws up.

The POR 15 is very expensive, so I pour it into a  glass jar and seal the top with some plastic (under the cover) cut from a shopping bag or like thing. The stuff seems to stay well for years and you can unscrew the top. Replace the plastic each time.
