Methinks this has less to do with the age of the vehicles than the age 
of ourselves -- when we were younger and more energetic and more 
motivated (less affluent) to keep our one Corvair running on very little 
money, we fixed it, ourselves.
The automobile of those times was a fairly mechanical device, and it was 
possible to repair some things with baling twine and (well chewed) 
bubble gum. Such is not the case for these new computer controlled models.
