<VV> shimming the pivot ball

It's just a matter of finding a washer that is the correct thickness to put under it.  The fun comes in figuring out how thick it needs to be.

And once obtained, should it be shorter than its' supposed to be, what's the best procedure to "shim" the pivot ball.  It sounds pretty straightforward.  But is it?  Thoughts and opinions welcome.
