Many of us old Corvair fans have seen the Chevy promotional movie "Daring
the Darien". (Now available on Youtube) It tells the story of a grueling
trek by three 1961 Corvairs through the Panamanian/Columbian jungle,
demonstrating the ruggedness of the Corvair's design. If you ever wondered what
has happened to that stretch of "almost" impenetrable jungle since then, the
April 22, 2013 issue of the New Yorker magazine has an article about the
region. The article does mention the three red Corvairs, and their success in
making it through to Columbia. The author, Jennie Erin Smith, has obviously
seen the Chevy film, since she quotes the narrator calling the Darien Gap
"the world's worst roadblock on the world's greatest highway". Like most
New Yorker articles, it goes on for pages and pages, telling you all you need
to know - then continues on some more. I am not recommending that you read
it, although it presents a sound history both before and after the
Corvairs. It does conclude that someday, despite the wishes of many of the local
inhabitants, a road may go through the Darien. - Seth Emerson
