Wouldn't it be difficult to screw up the adjustment that much? The only time I've had clutch adjustment issues was on my '63 FC. I had to put some shims under the pivot ball to get things to work correctly but it is pretty effortless even with the Clark's hd pressure plate and before the shims.

Leverage. If the "throw" of the cable is shortened due to improper adjustment to less than design distance then more effort is needed to release the clutch through the linkage.
