My garage is also attached to the house, it's below the living room. Usually raw gasoline isn't a problem (I have a '66 4 door hardtop) but the exhaust DOES smell, and it's strong. My wife and daughter constantly complain about the smell.
Modern cars have sealed fuel systems, catalytic converters, etc, which minimize the noxious smelling exhaust, but our Corvairs don't have any such devices. Just make sure you have a good story for your family ("I won't get rid of my car, she's like a member of the family, don't you want me to enjoy my hobby, etc") when and if they complain.
One side point: I had installed a mini catalytic converter on my (long gone) '69 Monza coupe, which all but eliminated the old-car exhuast smell. I've got one for the '66 but don't know when I'll have time to install it...it will help, though. It's hard to find a good location for it, since the Corvair exhaust is so compact. I'll probably put it on the very end of the system, after the muffler.
Good luck...Bill Hershkowitz, 66 Monza Sport Sedan, 110 PG A/C
Hi all :-) I am designing a new house. The garage will be attached with 6
foot high ceiling 'stalls' for 'Lisa' my 64 Monza Coupe. Lisa will be right
below my kitchen. Since they don't have vapor recovery will she be gasoline
stinky in my house? My current garage is detached and Lisa can do what she
wants when I am not around :-) Anything I can do to mitigate that?
