And yeah, air conditioning... alas, its actual meaning has been trumped by its colloquial meaning.

How about hot water heater?
Air conditioning is another word that is not used correctly.
HVAC or Heating, Ventilating and Air Conditioning. A/C usually means
cooling the air but, whether you cool it, heat it or dehumidify it you have
"conditioned" it!
