Before one ever reaches fore the point file and removes the protective
coating from voltage regulator ( and other relay) contacts,
please reach for the clean white paper or white card stock.
Gently press down on the moveable contact while dragging clean white
paper through the contacts. You should see dirt being removed by the
paper. Paper has a "grit"
but will not remove the good coatings.
Only when this does not restore the connection (test with an ohmmeter on
a very low scale) does one resort to 600 grit sandpaper, 400, or a point
file. Or one can reach for a point file if there is obvious pits on the
contacts. After filing or sanding, repeat the clean white paper routine
to remove filings, oxides, etc. from material removal.
This procedure is covered in most every shop manual on contact cleaning.
