Harry, 
You reference the "gas line anti-freeze"... well, one 12-16 ounce bottle would take care of a 20 gallon tank, whereas 10% ethanol in that same tank is TWO GALLONS... as with anything from strychnine to mother-in-laws, in extremely small doses it won't hurt ya as bad.

There's all the talk about ethanol being 'bad' for internal combustion
engines, especially small engines like chain saws lawn mowers, etc.

Why?

...and back in the day we used to add gas-line antifreeze to our gas tanks
to absorb moisture in the tank, but I think that was methanol. 

My college chemistry is a bit rusty; so what's the difference between the
two, and does methanol have these negative characteristics?
