<VV> methanol vs. ethanol

Unlike gasoline and butanol, ethanol (denatured booze) mixes quite well
with water; this corrodes carburetor metal and raises h**l with rubber hoses.
If the powers that be want to include bio-derived fuel, they don't have
to cause farmers in the Midwest to sequester their corn crop for
fermentation to ethyl alcohol rather than for food for humans and domestic animals;
biomass (waste agricultural material) ferments easily to butanol, which mixes
easily with gasoline and doesn't contribute to the damage done to fuel
system parts.
The reason methanol is used for racing but not on the street is that, if an
accidental fire should happen, there would be no visible flame and things
could get out of hand rather quickly. (Beside the fact that jetting for
methanol is hideously rich, compared to gasoline.)

There's all the talk about ethanol being 'bad' for internal combustion
engines, especially small engines like chain saws lawn mowers, etc.
Why?
...and back in the day we used to add gas-line antifreeze to our gas tanks
to absorb moisture in the tank, but I think that was methanol.
My college chemistry is a bit rusty; so what's the difference between the
two, and does methanol have these negative characteristics?
