When on a long trip and after riding on "E" for a while - say a half hour or
more with no "convenient" station in site - I turn the wheel back and forth
to get whatever might be in the tank to slosh a bit. So long as I can see
the needle bounce, I know there is at least something still in there. I
think about 390 was the furthest I went and put in 13.5 gallons, but then I
think that my speedo (and probably odo) reads about 10% low.
