tend to agree with Lon. I've driven throughout the west and southwest for
ears without any overheating issues. I've always made sure that my oil was
resh if I was making long trips and the fan belt was properly tensioned. I've
ever really worried about the lower shrouds and the only time I removed the
ower shrouds was when I tried a set of headers. Mind you, this was a non turbo
ngine. The turbo, under constant acceleration can stress an engine - think I-10
rom LA to Palm Springs or I-70 west from Denver - long stretches of uphill
riving at 70 to 80 mph. I can do this in a normally aspirated engine without
ny issues. Even in a stock turbo the engine temperatures will really climb. The
nly turbo setup that I have had any experience with that did not try to
verheat was Steve Goodman's. I don't know how he does it.
The long and short of it is that I would go anywhere, any time in my 62 sedan
nd not be concerned. And remember, we have a significan advantage over the
ater pumpers: If we do overheat, we pull over, raise the engine cover and when
he engine cools down, we go on our merry way. We don't need no stinkin' water.
