Ahh...  PO cobbling, gotta love it.   I assume 
it's one of those electric oil pressure sending 
units kinda like what Mopar used to use, nearly

That would be the oil temp snapswitch.  They 
should have left it there.   It's useful (when it 
works and isn't leaking).   The pressure gauge 
could have been done better, frankly, than 
cramming an electric sending unit into such a tight spot.

Now... as I recall, the gen/pump/filter housing 
on Cavecars wasn't initially tapped for a sending 
unit so somebody must have been, uh, cobbling.  Again.

Again, sounds like a sender for an electric oil 
pressure gauge.  Is there one in the car someplace?

If you want to keep the electric gauge (if indeed 
this is what it is), you could always pick up a 
short piece of threaded pipe and a coupler, 
extend the sending unit up a bit to get it out of 
the way of stuff.   Not too high, so the engine 
vibrations won't rattle/vibrate it and crack the 
pipe.  Been there done that.
