 Tom- No, you do not need to drain the oil, very little (if any) oil will come out of thehole when the spring and plunger are removed. It is a good idea to put something down (rags, cat litter, paper towels...) to catch the few drops that come out. Let us knowwhat you find.Kevin Nash
