He said his gauge registers 5psi -- doesn't sound like a switch to me.
Could be a sender. Or maybe he is interpreting the idiot light based on
switch specs ...
My first choice when there is an oil pressure question is to hook up a
'known to be reliable' direct reading gauge at the engine to double
check any faulty pressure readings.
Seems at least checking the spring is a good place to start, maybe even
replacing it with a new one -- are they available? These are too an
important of spring to risk one failing. (pardon the grammar, you
English majors)
My opinion would be that if a high volume pump fixes the low oil
pressure, there is something else wrong that also should be fixed if one
wants very many miles from this engine. Does one have to buy the whole
HV pump kit to get the selection of shims that typically used to come
with such? (I haven't bought one for a while) Shims are easier than
facing a few thou off the gears or case to get the right clearance.
I suppose there "could" be a unique problem with the filter or filter
bypass valving ...
