The original Corvair was a fastback version of the original Corvette; the  
station wagon version was the Nomad--all of which were "show" cars, not 
intended  for production.  Obviously, the 'Vette was so well liked that GM 
decided to  put it out in limited quantities, so---fiberglass instead of having 
to make  sheet metal dies.
