<VV> any known flat 8 - Not Much Vair - Off Topic - Et Cetera

Overhead valve engines ended the flathead era very quickly. Henry Ford was VERY slow to adopt anything else. In fact, the engineers fought with him tooth and nail for something better than splash lubrication! The very innovation he used to bring his company to life, he abandoned once he got set in his ways.

And pretty much ANY OHV V8 could whoop up on a flathead Ford. In fact, there was the Ardun OHV conversion in an effort to make more HP and keep this design alive. Of course, engines like the SBC stomped it so badly, it was all over but the shouting! And yes, I realize Ford went to OHV before the SBC came to be, but there were many other OHV V8s at the time, and Ford finally figured, if you can't beat 'em, join 'em!!

They didn't fall out of favor too fast. Ford used them from 1932 to 1954.

Egads!!! WHY??? The thing is heavy, not particularly powerful, thirsty,
etc. There's a damn good reason why flatheads fell out of favor so quickly!!

Now, something like the LSx is a FAR better idea...

Heaven knows the old flathead Ford is durable (thousands of hot rods proving
this out) but with only 3 main bearings?? And with the exhaust port running
through the head ? Although this can be corrected by swapping the intake

and exhaust systems and making an entirely new cam and changing the
valves.)

The classic Ford flathead V-8 doesn't weigh a lot, especially with
aluminum heads -- anyone ever think about putting one in the back of a
Vair?
