4-6 mil plastic membrane should work fine. As for paper; it better be
waterproof. Plain brown paper won't cut it.

Does one have to use the stock plastic or can it be fashioned out of a  
sheet of plastic?  Likewise with the paper.  Brown paper is easy to  come
by.  
Can it be made up with high grade paper?

It turned out my biggest water leak into front floor was from the  doors, if
you do not have the stock paper or some plastic stuck to the  inside of the
door behind the upholstery panel the water runs down the  inside of door,
into the openings and runs into the car between the door  and upholstery
panel.

You cannot see this happening


I ran  across these instructions in the 1960 shop manual, wish I had seen
them  earlier.
