Trey
I grew up three blocks from the plant.
All the engines were Assembled at Tonawanda. That's why every Vair engine
block number begins with T.
The parts were casted in Messina, NY, but Tonawanda did all the final
assembly, and the engines were shipped from Tonawanda to the car/Truck
assembly points.
Back when the plant used to have an open house so the community could come
in and see the engines being made (mid-late 60's) I used to go there, and
you could see the Corvair assembly and engine test area. The engines were
tested with propane as I remember. Makes you wonder why someone hasn't
modified the Vair to run on propane. Then again, maybe someone has.
There is a rumor---nobody knows for certain, that after the end of Corvair
Production, part of the floor in the plant was being changed from wooden
blocks (so different machines could be mounted in different areas) over to
concrete. and nearly a half box car of finished Corvair engines was used for
FILL, the concrete poured on top of it.
Best Regards
