<VV> LM Shifter Adjustment

Anybody got a good method to adjust the shifter on an LM 4 speed?  The procedure in the shop manual gives a process which calls for measuring the distance from the shifter to the front bench seat.  I have a COSA with bucket seats with seat extenders. Having  a hell of a time getting a smooth shift and reverse is almsot impossible.  Everything is new and there are the bushings in the shifter tube. Thanks in advance.
