Earlier today at the NJACE auction I picked up a gas heater setup I'm
hoping I'll be able to make work for our year round driver. I've never
touched one of these before and the car did not originally have one. I
broke out the 61 shop manual and the tech guide... sat down with the
cardboard box full of parts and started checking it out to see what was
missing etc. Those books answered some of my questions but not others.
I am missing: fuel pressure regulator, relay that mounts to the upper
housing (3 wire), fuel lines beyond the one attached to the burner.
It is important to note here I just want this thing to be safe and
functional, not concours, so using non-original components is fine. It is
also important to me to get it working as inexpensively as possible, I know
replacing parts can get expensive I'll clean and rebuild anything I can.
It seems the factory setup is to draw fuel from the fuel pump back in the
engine room, is there any reason not to use a small electric fuel pump on a
line tapped in near the sending unit? Any safety suggestions?
My buddy says he has a small electric pump and a modern pressure regulator
that we should be able to set to 5psi that I read is proper. I'd love any
advice on how to wire in, plumb, and set up the electric pump so it will
be fairly safe. Should I look for someone with a (hopefully cheap) factory
pressure regulator I can rebuild or is it ok to use the modern one my buddy
has on hand?
Can anyone give me enough details on the missing relay to be able to
replace it (hopefully with an inexpensive unit even if not exact)?
That's all I know I need so far, next I'll be testing components to see
what works and what doesn't. If anyone can give me info on cheap (non
original) replacement parts I might need I'd appreciate it. I've already
looked through Clark's listings so what I'm looking for are alternatives...
for example the ignition coil... can I use some other ignition coil if mine
is bad? Any other tips?
Thanks!
