Actually, a mini spare, mounted up side down will fit in the stock location
on a turbo car with A\C. It clears the compressor just fine.

Subject: Re: <VV> Mini-Spare Coast-to-Coast
When my then-girlfriend and I drove my 1962 Greenbrier from New Jersey
(11 miles outside of NYC) to Seattle for the CORSA Convention, then down
the west coast to L.A. before returning across the country, covering
more than 8000 miles in all, we did not carry a full-size spare. We did
not carry a mini-spare. We carried TWO mini-spares, harvested from RWD
mid-size GM products of the time.
We carried two mini spares because
(1) A mini-spare, when mounted in a Greenbrier's stock spare location,
permits the engine cover to be lifted without hitting the spare
(2) With an easily-fabricated bracket, a second mini-spare fit right
ahead of the first one
(3) There are some wide-open spaces out west so we figured that if one
is good, two is better.
Naturally, we needed neither of them anywhere along the way.
Now, I will freely admit that things are different today, with the
availability of stock-size tires a real issue for Corvair cars and
becoming an issue for Corvair trucks. Today for a trip like that I
might carry a full-size spare instead, unless I had changed to more
readily-available tires.
