One seldom thought of item that may cause symptoms similar to unvented gas cap, vapor lock, or failed fuel pump is the fuel pump push rod. Remove the pump and pull out the pushrod. The bottom [follower area] of this rod must be flat. If it has a concave shape ground into it the eccentric on the cam shaft is failing. Many electric fuel pumps are installed to fix this 'vapor lock' condition and they do the job ... but not for the reason that was assumed.
